How do you feel about the name Ruby?

Okay guys. As some of you probably know, my style is pretty old fashioned. I like names like Daphne and Eleanor and Louisa for girls. Now, I'm starting to dig Ruby, but I'm not convinced.

On one hand, Rolling Stones and Kaiser Chiefs have songs named Ruby Tuesday and Ruby, respectively, which I like.I also have a dog named Roxie, which is similar in style. (I'm not having kids for years, so I'm not worried about the dog's name being similar to a name I like right now. Daphne's going to be my first daughter, so it would be quite awhile until I would use Ruby.)

On the other hand, Ruby reminds me of Lucy. It's a name I find sweet and charming, but not a name I think wears well into adulthood. That's why Lucinda is on my list. I'm not concerned that Ruby and Lucy are too similar, as my fiance hates both Lucy/Lucinda. He does like Ruby, though. I think Ruby might be too cutesy, or not professional enough to grow up well.

Well, what do you guys think? Pros? Cons? Yes? No?

How do you feel about the name Ruby?
Let's not forget Rancid's 1995 Ruby Soho. Ruby is an alternagirl choice if ever one was.

I share your affection for old school, throwback names. While I'm not sure Ruby exactly fits that description, I do think that it meshes nicely with choices like Daphne and Lucy.

As for whether it ages well, I think that it endures better than, say, Lucy or Carrie or virtually any other y/ie ending name because, after all, a Ruby is a gemstone. It's reasonable that it doesn't have a more formal version.

And yet, I'm still not sure if I would use it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I do think that Ruby is perhaps a bit too precious. I wouldn't use Emerald or Diamond, either, and I doubt I would even consider Pearl.

In any case, Daphne is a fabulous name. Too bad your fiance won't go for Lucinda - that's another great choice!
Reply:I don't know why but the name Ruby reminds me of an extremely fat lady that has bright red skin because of high blood pressure %26amp; heart problems. I do like Lucy but not Lucinda.
Reply:i had a friend named ruby who turned out to be a slut. so naw i don't care for the name. everyone in my town called her rubyho.
Reply:Actually, I find Ruby to be a charming old-fashioned classic even MORE suited to an older woman. Don't misunderstand -- I adore such names for infants, children and adults alike! ;)

All I'm saying is that this one doesn't strike me as the sort that wouldn't wear well throughout the child's -- and one day, woman's -- life. Quite the opposite! I actually find Ruby to be more along the lines of Pearl, Matilda and, yes, Eleanor ... all personal favorites that some would call "old lady" names but that I find wonderfully intriguing even on an infant. I think it would be lovely as a sister to Daphne. ;)
Reply:Well, I like the name Ruby. I can't say I LOVE it, but I don't hate it either. Let's just say it's okay.

What I do love about this name is that it's such a sweet and spunky classic. Everybody's heard of it, but yet no one actually uses this name. I do think it's a bit cutesy, but compared to the names like Hayley and Gracie that everybody's using these days, Ruby sounds very grown up.

If you're worried about it being too cute, try Rubina, which is a Spanish elaboration of Ruby. Rubye, a variation of Ruby, is okay too. If you have a baby boy, you may want to consider Reuben. (Ruby is also a masculine nickname for Reuben)

Ruby is a sweet and pretty name, and a lovely one to grow up on. Not my favourite name (I'd prefer Lucy or Daphne over Ruby anyday) but still a good choice for a baby girl.
Reply:I like Rudy better, like the little brat on the Cosby show
Reply:Yer i really like the name Ruby

for a second name you could use Grace

so Ruby Grace ! only an idea

BUT YER RUBY IS REALLY GOOD

XXX
Reply:I like Ruby, its pretty easy for a kid to spell and cutesy, but i have only known adults with this name so i dont see a problem there.

i have never known a nice ruby though, one ruby was a whore and the other was a big fat teacher.

i think u shud start from scratch sorry. hate lucinda, very bimboish.

what about Annabel Sophia Margot Amelie Katari Freya Willow Adinah Alannah Rorie Lila Ava or Alva?
Reply:Okay Ruby Adeline is the second name on my list for girls, we decided on Nina Sophia....I love the name Ruby it will grow just fine. I've only known senior ladies with the name and they were all admirable.
Reply:i like rudy... like from the cosby show? iv wanted 2 name my child that 4 4eva
Reply:I dont like Ruby at all sorry. And how do you know your gonna have girls? Think about That.
Reply:Ruby and Lucy are not names that I find too cutesy. Alot of names ending in 'y' and 'ie' are cutesy to me, but these are not. I guess because the classiness overtakes any idea of cuteness.

And just to throw it out there.. You could use Rubina nn Ruby. But, I prefer Ruby on its own.

You could also use Lucille, Lucia, and Luciana, with the nickname Lucy.

Reply:I love the name Ruby! I also love the name Annabelle and Ivy. I like Addie and Abbie. Oh, I wish I could have a baby! Good Luck to you and your fiance for a happy, healthy, beautiful baby girl (with a name to match).

Don't worry about being too cutesy. She will likely have a nickname anyway.
Reply:I have a friend who had a Yorkie named Ruby. And my brother has a Yorkie named Lucy. So that's what comes to mind for me. Tiny dogs. Not to say that they're bad names. I rather like them, because like you, I am drawn to older, traditional names. But my personal experience just makes me think of tiny dogs when I hear those names.

: )
Reply:I like Ruby - it's unusual but not in a bizarre, whacky way.

I also like Grace...
Reply:I like Ruby i think its lovely. You could also name a boy Rubin if you wanted its kinda similar.I like Ruby much better than Lucy and I like Lucy on its own instead of Lucinda. Ruby is not too cutesy at all but Lucy might be.
