JK Rowling's inspiration for the invention of bottling memories to be viewed in a pensieve,a practice featured in her Harry Potter books?
""If only there could be an invention", i said impulsively, "that bottled up a memory like a scent. And, when one wanted it, the bottle could be uncorked, and it would be like living the moment all over again.""
Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
Could this be...?
anything is possible
Reply:Yes...and no. The pensieve allows memories to be viewed objectively, which this quote does not state. And it's not "living the moment all over again", because you're not the person you're viewing..you're an objective audience character when you enter the pensieve.
While the basics match up, this probably isn't the actual quote that inspired Rowling...but wow, you seem a dedicated fan!!
Reply:hmm, very interesting, I'm sure she's read a great deal. Maybe you should e-mail her and find out! i read Rebecca and now that I think about it, it does seem a lot alike. =)
Reply:Not beyond the realms of possibility, is it?
Reply:I'm sorry, what was the question?
Reply:I think you might be on to something.
Reply:I reckon it was! JK got her ideas from everywhere eg:
a( Sirius Black, animagus is a dog, Sirius is the name of the Dog Star.
b) Remus J Lupin, werewolf, Remus and Romulus were the founders of Rome and were suckled by wolves, Lupine is latin for wolf-like.
c) Fleur Delacour, Veela or Wila in Norse mythology were beautiful, fairylike nymphs/women with long flowing silvery hair, that could shape-shift in to horses, swans, falcons, wolves etc.
d) Nicolas Flamel was a real person who lived in Paris in France and was a known Alchemist.
e) Draco is a constellation that is in the northern sky and it orbits the milky way.
I could go on all day but you should do some research for fun and see what you can come up with
HAVE FUN
Reply:Sorry, I'm still on Enid Blyton!!!
Reply:sure it might be an inspiration...'Remember ideas and notions are free for that taking and using... the printed prose is copyrighted and IS NOT free. anyone can take Ms Du Maurier's idea as long as they don't use her words...
Reply:Maybe you could open up your bottle and remember what question you were going to ask, that would be a good start....
Reply:If you're looking for Puns try the Xanth Series by Piers Anthony.
e.g. liquid poured from the tree from the various cuts made - the smell from the 5th Channel was very strong..
JKR uses 'diagonally' 'nocturnally' and 'pensive' - anyone else found others? as well as pigeon latin for the spells.
