Reply:The postman and the farm people were attacked and killed by the birds, and the postman's body was then trampled by the cows who had escaped from their paddock, when no-one came to milk them. An inconclusive ending is one where the author leaves it to the reader to draw their own conclusions about what happens after the story ends. You are left to wonder whether the family do survive, as, at the end, Du Maurier just leaves them resigned to their fate and expecting the worst, with no hope of outside help.
