Are these books good?

I am getting these books for my birthday (I am turning 15) and was wondering if anybody had read any of them and what they thought.

- Catcher In The Rye by J.D Salinger (I know this is good, because I have read it and just wanted to own it, but what did you think of it?).

- Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier?

- Lord Of The Flies by William Golding?

- The House Of Mirth by Edith Wharton?

- A Handful Of Dust by Evelyn Waugh?

- The Day Of The Locust by Nathanael West?

- Requiem For A Dream: A Novel by Hubert Selby Jr. ? (Random I know, but my friend just read it and told me it was good).

Thanks

Are these books good?
I think you will like most of them. The House of Mirth seems slow moving at times, but I liked it. I preferred Ethan Frome by the same writer. Hubert Selby Jr. has a reputation for writing about somewhat gross topics. The Day of the Locust is funny and irreverent. I don't know about Waugh's book. I hope you enjoy them all.
Reply:Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies, %26amp; Requiem for a Dream are all exceptional.
Reply:You should REALLY get the book Go Ask Alice.

It is SO worth the reading, I promise!
Reply:Lord of the Flies is amazing. It's damn near frightening - - it deffinitely makes you think.
Reply:Catcher in the Rye - in my opinion, there has never been a better meditation on teen angst and depression. And Lord of the Flies is brilliant....frightened me half to death, though.
Reply:I've read Lord of the Flies. It is an excellent book, but it is sad and depressing. I would recommend reading it though because it is about human nature and it is pretty right on. It is also one of those stories that you wont just forget about in a few months or so because it is very thought provoking and a bit disturbing. I read it in high school too. I think we had to read it for a class of mine.
Reply:Catcher In The Rye by J.D Salinger - you are definitely right on this one!

Lord Of The Flies by William Golding - this ones such a bore, the method does not work for me but it has some pretty powerful message, bout human nature and even some pilitical aspect, read it, and you'll see what i mean.
Reply:The Catcher in the Rye is one of the greatest books ever written. And one of the most original.

The only other one your list that I have read is Lord of the Flies. It is good. I mean, it's well-written and interesting, but there was still something about it that I didn't like. I think I had trouble with the characters' motivations (or lack thereof).

I have heard of your other novels, and I think its great that you are reading novels of literary quality at such a young age. I would highly recommend that you look into reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac. It is the perfect novel for intelligent, rebellious teenagers who are so close to the so-called freedoms of adulthood but haven't quite made it there yet. I've always loved classic literature since I was in about seventh grade or so, but reading On the Road at 15 or 16 changed everything for me and introduced me to a completely different aspect of literature.
Reply:I hear Lord of the Flies is good.

You should try and get Twilight, New Moon, and/or Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer!!
Reply:Catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Flies are both CLASSICS!...as for the others, I haven't read them, so I don't know whether or not they are good.

Some of my faves this year are The Da Vinci Code, and I am re-reading Dracula for the third time since I was a kid.
Reply:I thought Rebecca was excellent -- much better than the movie version. I tried reading some more Daphne du Maurier at one time, but I didn't find any others I liked as well. I read Lord of the Flies in high school -- I can't say I actually enjoyed it a lot, but it was an interesting experience, and I'm glad I read it. I'm ashamed to say I haven't read the rest -- even Catcher in the Rye, which everyone says is a great book.

When I was 15, I think my favorite book was Wuthering Heights.
