Help! My goldfish is really sick and I have tried everything...at first I thought he was constipated as he bloated up so I gave him Daphne...that didn't work...he is at the bottom, bloated, lethargic, bottom heavy...I have done two water changes and also he's on a course of ESHA medication in case he has dropsy. But he doesn't seem to be getting better. It's getting to the point where I worry if he is in pain and whether I should euthanase him? Does anyone have any sensible answers to miracle cure ideas please, diagnosis or whether I should euthanase him? I don't want to but I don't want him to suffer. Thanks
My goldfish has been ill for one week?
The best thing you can do now is to do a major water change, assuming you have the same pH and temp for your tap water and tank water, do a 70~80% change twice weekly for the next two week.

Then you will have to diagnoses what you think is the cause of the problem. Stop feeding him for a few days, and if the bloated shape doesn't go down, it's probably not due to constipation. In that case I recommend that you treat it with some anti-internal bacterial.
Personally I feel that as long as the fish is upright, I would give him a chance. If he's already on it's side, then I would consider putting it out of it's misery.
Reply:sounds like hes dying mate
Reply:Just kill it mate. Theres plenty more fish in the sea.
Reply:sensible answer? GET A NEW ONE!
Reply:daphnia doesn't work that well for constipation, best try with cooked de-shelled pea and see if he improves. constipation will cause swimbladder trouble which in turn can lead to internal infections.
but if you notice his scales start to pinecone, then it will be dropsy, and 99% of the time there's no chance of a fish recovering from this. it's a secondary condition after the internal organs are beginning to shut down.
Reply:Well if it's possible to Euthenise a fish then you should, I am sorry but fish don't ussually just get sick, they normally look like that before their day comes.
Reply:,did you check his temperature, give him an extra strength aspirin
Reply:if the medication for dropsy doesn't work try one for an internal bacterial problem. if that doesn't work and he is still the same then euthanisia is probably the only answer. the kindest way to do it is putting the fish into a container with just enough water to cover it. into the water put a few drops of clove oil and within about 20 mins the fish dies peacefully and calmly. its worked for me. check your water aswell as it could be water poisoning. give your pond a partial water change and then also add a pond tonic salt as helps numb the fish against the water problems until the water quality is back to normal. good luck and i do hope they fish recovers
Reply:I am sorry but it does sound like dropsy probably as a result of a bacterial infection he must have picked up. Sinking to the bottom means he has lost some control of his swim bladder because of the ascites. If the scales are protruding from the side of the fish (pine-cone appearance), it's already terminal. I am really sorry. Although it's not contagious, if the other fish in the tank community are stressed (chemicals or excessive food pollutants in the water or a change in temperature), they will be susceptible to infection.
Reply:have you taken the water to be tested?
Reply:I would suggest doing a 50% water change. If you have a heater increase the tempt by two degrees and add some aquairm salt. Also get a sample of your water and take it to a local pet shop to get tested. Most places will not charge for this. If your water tests fine then I would suggest you try feeding him some shelled and cooked mashed peas. He may just be constipated and the drug that you are using isn't working. I wish you the best of luck.
