As stated above, these are mostly Roman names for the Pagan gods:

Diana-- Goddess of the Hunt

Cupid -- Venus's son. God of passion.

Venus -- Goddess of erotic love

Dido -- Queen of Carthage in the Aeneid

Aeneas -- a fighter in the Trojan War and ancestor of the Romans. Hero of the Aeneid.

Ariadne -- Midas's daughter, Theseus's and later Dionysius's lover.

Neptune -- God of the Sea.

Apollo and Daphne -- God of the Sun and music, chased the nymph Daphne who escaped by turning into a Laurel tree.

Hercules -- a son of Zeus by the wife of Amphytrion

Cadmus -- founder of the City of Thebes and inventor of the Alphabet in Greek Myths

Jove -- another name for Jupiter.

A Midsummer Night's Dream was Shakespeare's version of a Masque. This was entertainment for the elite. Information here:

While fireworks were not unknown back then, pyrotechnics as we have in blockbuster films were clearly not practical, and erudition was one of the games they played to entertain the elite. So all these figures were, essentially figures of popular culture, as were Theseus and Hypolita.

Check the Wikipedia, and check the External links at the bottom of the article about Midsummer Night's Dream for more information.
Reply:Most of these are roman or greek gods or heroes. Cupid is of course the little match maker, Venus the goddess of love and fertility, Neptune, god of the sea, Hercules, half god son of zues.

Just copy and paste each name into google, you'll get tons of information. Or pick up a book on Greek and Roman gods and mythology.
Reply:They are all Greek God and Goddess's. I recommend going to wikpedia and looking up " A Mid Summers Night..." for your self. It is really one of the sweetest plays writen by Shakesphere.
