How can I potty train my 2-year old min pin fully?

I have a 2 year old min pin that likes to go potty in the house. She does go potty outside to. I take out every 2 hours and watch her every move. When i do see her doing it i yell and try to pick her up to take her outside, but i cant catch her. I tried putting a leash on her so i can catch her better, but she thinks it is a tug a war toy. I also tried locking her in her cage when i leave, but she barks and scratches at the cage. I live in a duplex i can't have her barking constantly! Recently, i tried a gate to block off the kitchen and when i came home i found her in the living room with the gate on the floor. I think she has officially out smarted me and i really don't know what to do anymore! I have been this baby girls 3rd family and i dont want to give up on her now. i know she is very smart, but just has been a little to spoiled. Now she thinks she Princess Daphne! Please Help!

Sincerly,

Julia

Ps. I got her about a month ago

Consistancy, and it sounds like you haven't been being very consistant. Your inital reactions were right, just be patient. Continue trying to catch her in the act, and put her outside when you catch her. Don't bother with the gate or crate, this is something she has to learn, and she need free regin to do it.

When I was training my dog she would still have accidents for a couple years. Remember when this happens, never scold the dog, scold the 'mess'. Bring the dog to the place where it happened, and say "No. Bad" to the mess. If you scold the dog, it will only learn it gets it trouble for using the bathroom and try to hide it from you (which it sounds like she might be doing with her sneeky hard-to-catch behavior).

Another important thing I learned was, what goes in, must come out. While shes still learning don't give her a continuious supply of water. Fill her bowl for her a couple times a day, and after she drinks, put it away and watch her, she'll be needing to go out soon. Same goes for her food, when you give her, her meals, watch her. This way you don't need to constantly have your eye on her, just when you know she'll have to go soon.

And in regard to controling what goes into her, also remember not to feed her immediatly before you leave the house, feed her a couple hours before to make sure she goes before you leave. Then you can feed her again when you get home, but remember to watch her like a hawk for signs she has to go.

And when she does potty outside, I'm sure you know this, but Praise! Praise! Praise! :) Good luck!
Reply:Thanks for your advice. I finally caught her going potty! I picked her up said No then took her outside and said go potty outside. We are making progress it takes time and i need to be more patient with her and not give up like her previous owners. Thanks again Report It

First after she pees in the house (and you catch her in the act) pour a little white vinegar over the spot. bring her to it and put her little doggie nose in it. Tell her "no" in a firm voice. (this is your act of scenting it as "Yours" and not "Hers") You can even put a little dab of vinegar on her tongue. Then take her outside (she wont go, but this is the proper place to go) or put her in her kennel.

when going away put her in a bathroom and close the door. get her chew toys to keep her quiet and amused. Or even look into getting a pet sitter. They are relatively inexpensive and may be worth it.

Good luck!
Reply:Do NOT rub her nose in it and scold her. Contrary to popular belief, this does not teach a dog that peeing on the floor is bad. It teaches a dog that the smell of pee is bad. Which can end up in very complicated psychological issues.

The crate (cage) is the way to go. In a way, 2 year-olds are easier to potty-train than 2 month-olds because they can actually hold their bladders for more than one and a half hours. You need not take her out every two hours anymore.

She should be crated anytime you cannot supervise her - this includes at night - because everytime she gets away with peeing on the floor is a lesson that peeing inside is okay. Put a stuffed Kong or Nylabone in her crate to keep her occupied and to reinforce that the crate is a positive place.
Reply:what you are doing is good, but make sure when you yell she understands she has been bad not that you are mad, try not yelling until you have cought her, take her out more often and when she goes you really need to tell her she is being really good reall praise her, treats, soft/execited voise, say good girl (or whatever you say) act like you are trainher for the first time she will likly pick up on it fully
